That is why we are phasing out our membership program and focusing on keeping out-of-pocket costs low for everyone in the communities we serve through our Patient Advocacy program and by working to increase insurance coverage for our services.

Why we are doing this?

We believe that everyone deserves access to lifesaving care – our core value is to give our patients the best experience possible from beginning to end. With that in mind, we will no longer sell memberships. Memberships were previously sold to help patients avoid out-of-pocket expenses related to air medical services. We sold memberships because we believed it was the best way to help patients we cared for to pay for the care we provided not covered by insurance, but Patient Advocacy and increasing in-network agreements have shown that there is a better way.

Patient care decisions should never be made or delayed based on a membership.

Even with memberships, patients are responsible for co-pays and deductibles and they must work through the insurance process and they may still receive a balance bill – Air Methods is working to help patients through that maze.

We WILL honor all current memberships through the end of their contract but will not renew these memberships afterwards. But again, you shouldn’t need a membership – you should be able to focus on your own care.

What does this mean for your community?

Air Methods is still fully committed to all communities we serve. We will transport any patient that needs it and work with them through the entire insurance process. As we go in-network with more healthcare insurance plans, like Humana, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Anthem, you will not need a membership at all because it will be covered by insurance. If you are on Medicare or Medicaid, you are also covered and do not need a membership.

Why competitors sell memberships?

Memberships were sold in the past to help patients avoid out-of-pocket expenses related to air medical services. Over time, we have determined that there are better and more efficient ways to work with patients such as patient advocacy, in-network agreements and community partnerships. With our new no membership required policy, memberships will not be sold to those who do not need them (Medicare/Medicaid).

What are we doing to make memberships obsolete?

In the place of our membership program, all patients who fly with Air Methods will have access to robust services to help navigate the post-flight billing process and avoid costly out-of-pocket expenses. The Air Methods advantage, with no membership required, includes the following:

  • Patient Advocacy: We will work with patients to ensure that health plans resolve claims in a way most beneficial to patients.
  • In-network Strategy: When we are in-network, patients are only responsible for their insurance plan co-pay and deductible and will never receive a balance bill. As of January 2019, we are in-network with some of the largest health insurance companies in more than 23 states.
  • Community Partnerships: Our Community Partnership Program is an alternative to a membership for a city/county that still wants to provide financial assistance to their residents in the event of an air medical transport with Air Methods.

What does it mean to be in-network?

In-network means that it is part of your insurance plan. Staying in-network for healthcare services can help consumers avoid unexpected spending as well as balanced billing, which is the practice of billing a patient for the difference between the plan’s reimbursement and the medical charges.

Where we are in-network, patients will never receive a balance bill for a medically-necessary Air Methods transport. It is the same for both Medicare and Medicaid. A membership is not needed if you have Medicare or Medicaid, and patients will never receive a balance bill from Air Methods.
