Base kicks off National EMS Week with celebration, former patient returns to thank flight crew who helped save his life

HORNELL, NY – May 20, 2025 – LifeNet of New York 7-7, based at the Hornell Municipal Airport, celebrated 15 years of providing lifesaving service to communities across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes region with a special event on Sunday that brought together local first responders, healthcare partners, and community members. The event marked the start of National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week and featured an emotional reunion between former patient Nathan Donahue and the LifeNet flight crew who delivered critical care following his severe ATV accident nearly seven years ago.

“I don’t remember much about the day, but during my recovery, I was told I had brain swelling due to a TBI [traumatic brain injury],” said Donahue. “Through the care of the first responders, the LifeNet team, and my doctors, I made a good recovery.”

Before the accident, Donahue had been preparing to enter the police academy with hopes of a career in law enforcement. While his injuries initially forced him to put that dream on hold, his determination and the care he received helped him make a full recovery and continue his journey in law enforcement. Today, Donahue is a sheriff deputy with Steuben County and a partner to the LifeNet of New York team.

“Being involved in similar incidents now through my job, I understand just how much training and experience it takes to do what they do,” said Donahue. “I can’t thank the LifeNet team enough. I can say with 100% certainty, that if it weren’t for their professionalism and care, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Donahue is just one of thousands of patients who LifeNet’s mission has positively impacted over the past 15 years.

“Reunions like this bring full circle the impact of our work,” said Hector Camacho, LifeNet of New York flight paramedic and one of two LifeNet clinicians who provided critical care to Donahue that day. “It’s a celebration of teamwork, expertise, and the lives saved through our rapid, advanced care.”

Often referred to as “flying ERs,” LifeNet services provide rapid critical care access to rural and underserved areas where minutes can make the difference between life and death.

LifeNet of New York 7-7 is one of 12 air medical bases strategically located across the state, forming a comprehensive EMS network. Operating 24/7/365, LifeNet aircraft are staffed by highly trained clinicians and equipped to deliver ICU-level care in flight, including the ability to administer whole blood, a vital resource in trauma cases.

As National EMS Week continues, LifeNet of New York celebrates its commitment to advancing emergency care across the region today and for years to come.
